SCOURIE HOTEL, built by the second Duke of Sutherland as a coaching inn, looks out over the sheltered waters and white sands of Scourie Bay on the west coast of Sutherland. It is one of Scotland's best known angling hotels.

Fishermen are extremely well catered for, but the area has many other attractions including the nearby seabird reserve of Handa Island. The magnificent scenery of the north west also attracts sightseers and hill-walkers. Many guests return to this remote and peaceful region year after year.

Hotel rooms are comfortable and well appointed, and most have views to the Bay or the tops of Ben Stack, Foinaven and Arkle. There are two large family rooms with outstanding views. All bedrooms have heating, tea and coffee making, but (as a matter of hotel policy) no television. Radios are available.

There are two lounges with open fires, plus a cocktail bar and public bar serving real ale. Anglers' facilities include rod room, drying room and freezer. Meals feature fresh local produce such as salmon, venison and sea foods and there is a well-stocked wine cellar. Scourie Hotel is STB 3 star commended. A 2-bedroom chalet is also available.

Prices:
Seasonal tariffs apply. Dinner, B&B from GBP 48. Reductions on stays of 8+ nights. See the Scourie Hotel website for further details.
Brown Trout - Salmon - Sea Trout | Local Lochs and Rivers
FISHING AT SCOURIE
Set amid wild, rugged scenery, the Scourie district is especially attractive to trout anglers. The fishing available to hotel guests covers 25,000 acres of land, with about 250 lochs and lochans split into 40 hotel-controlled beats. Additional fishing is let from Scourie District Angling Club, Reay Forest Estate and Kylestrome Estate. Most rivers in North West Sutherland connect a loch, or series of lochs, to the sea, with salmon and sea trout running these systems from late spring onwards. The hotel has boat fishing for salmon and sea trout on Loch Stack and Loch More, and river fishing on the Dionard and elsewhere.

Availability and Prices: All hotel-controlled fishing, except salmon and sea trout beats on Lochs Stack and More and the River Dionard, is free to guests - including use of hotel boats. The hotel has three 2- rod boats per day on Loch Stack costing GBP 25-40 depending on time of year. Loch More boats are GBP 20-25 per day and the Dionard is normally let as a 2-rod beat. Because of its popularity it is advisable to book Loch Stack at the time of reservation. The day rate for a ghillie (required) on Loch Stack is GBP 50. Full weeks are sometimes available on the Dionard. The hotel fishing is allocated daily by a roster system.

WILD BROWN TROUT FISHING
Some of the hotel brown trout lochs can be accessed from the roadside but most of the better ones involve walking - although it is generally fairly easy. On average anglers will walk from 3 to 8 miles a day. Evening and Sunday fishing are not permitted, and all the fishing on hotel controlled beats is by fly only, either dry, wet, or dapping. There are brown trout of up to 5 pounds and in a fortnight guests would expect to have a reasonable chance of trying for one of these. However, the really big fish are quite difficult to catch. An average angler on a first visit can expect to catch upwards of 6 fish per day with a few of about a pound.
Brown Trout Season: 1 April - 6 October

SALMON AND SEA TROUT FISHING
Salmon tend to be mainly grilse between 4 and 8lbs, although a fish of 23 pounds was taken from Loch Stack in 1997. Sea trout vary from finnock (immature fish) to many pounds. Access to Loch Stack is from the roadside.

Tackle: The hotel has rods, reels and lines for hire and a good selection of flies and nylons. Traditional Scottish trout and sea trout flies are mainly used, though some newer reservoir flies such as the Muddler Minnow can be useful for salmon.
Ghillies Fishing is let without a ghillie (except Loch Stack) but hotel ghillies are available if required. Hotel boats are easy to handle and advice on flies and places to fish is freely available.
Salmon & Seatrout Season: June - end September
