Brown
Trout, Sea Trout, Salmon | Loch Assapol,
Mull Rivers and Lochs
|

LOCH ASSAPOL Loch Assapol - in the south west of Mull - teems with wild, hard-fighting brown trout, as well as sea-trout and the occasional salmon throughout the season. The small Bunessan River links Assapol to the sea loch, Loch na Lathaich, and the sea itself is only a mile away. When high tides and heavy rains combine to give a spate, it is a short sprint for the sea-trout and salmon to reach the freshwater loch. In recent years a weir has been built which has raised the level of the loch and created more feeding for fish, increasing the average size of the brown trout. The loch has produced a brown trout of over 7 pounds, but the average weight is 8-10 ounces. Guests at Saorphin Cottages have free fishing and the use of a boat on the loch. Tackle and Methods All legal methods of fishing are allowed on Loch Assapol although fly fishing is encouraged. Conservation of salmon and sea trout stocks is important, and visiting anglers are asked to exercise restraint in the numbers of hen fish killed. All of the traditional wet flies will take fish on Assapol. Particular favourites are: Butcher, Peter Ross, Teal Blue and Silver or Alexandra on the point; Invicta, Mallard and Claret, Silver March Brown, or Wickham's Fancy on the middle dropper; and Loch Ordie, Zulu, Claret and Bumble, Black and Peacock Spider or Soldier Palmer on the bob. Flies are fished traditional loch style in teams of three. The Loch Ordie on the bob, dribbled through the surface of the water on the retrieve, can be particularly successful for brown trout. Dry flies, when fish are taking insects from the surface, are also worth trying, as is dapping when there is a good breeze. |
TROUT
AND SALMON FISHING ON MULL Mull is an excellent location for fishing with a wealth of lochs and rivers within a relatively small area. Tackle and permits can be obtained in Tobermory, and elsewhere locally, and costs are reasonable considering the quality of the fishing. Loch Frisa is the largest freshwater loch on Mull, and holds a good number of brown trout averaging 8-10 ounces, but trout of over 5 pounds are not uncommon. There is also a chance of salmon and sea trout, which enter the loch via the River Aros and Ledmore Burn. The River Aros is fly fishing only below the Ledmore junction and salmon average 6lb and sea trout 1½lb. The record salmon from the Aros weighed 45lb. Loch Aros has year-round stocked rainbow trout fishing. Loch Ba is the other large body of fresh water on Mull, and it holds brown trout, salmon and sea trout. Large sea trout can still be caught on the loch. There are many other spate streams and good hill lochs throughout the island, including the River Bellart, the Mishnish Lochs, and lochs Sguabain and Torr. Sea trout can also be caught in the sea lochs and river estuaries. Brown Trout Season: 15th March - 6th October Salmon & Sea Trout: 11 February - 31 October Rainbow trout and sea fishing are permitted year-round. No Sunday fishing for brown trout, salmon and sea trout.
SEA FISHING There are a large number of shipwrecks around Mull that attract a good variety of fish. The British boat record plaice, weighing 10lb 3oz, was caught in Lunga Sound off the west coast of the island in 1974. The deep waters of the Sound of Mull and Forth of Lorn are famous for the huge common skate they produce, with specimens of over 200 pounds having been tagged and released. The waters to the south and west are more open to the Atlantic, which brings in other species such as sea bass. |
