Salmon, Trout & Sea Trout | Rivers Tweed and Ettrick & Local Lochs
SALMON FISHING
Philipburn House is well placed for salmon fishing on the Tweed, one of Europe's top salmon rivers, as well as the smaller rivers Ettrick (shown opposite) and Yarrow. These rivers have good autumn salmon runs, but spring fish also run the Tweed and into the Ettrick. Philipburn's private Tweed beat, Sunderland Hall, is situated at the junction of the Tweed and Ettrick and includes some water on the Ettrick. Although it is at its best in October and November Sunderland Hall can produce good fishing earlier in the year if conditions are right. The Tweed also has a good run of sizeable sea trout.

AVAILABILITY:
A salmon fishing booking service is provided for hotel guests (individuals or groups). Rods are available on the Sunderland Hall beat, and other beats on the Tweed, Ettrick and Yarrow. Early booking is advised, particularly for the autumn run from mid-September onwards. All-inclusive Salmon Fishing Courses are also available. Beat bookings are payable in full at the time of booking.

METHODS: Fly fishing allowed all season. Spinning from 14 February to 14 September, otherwise fly only. Bait fishing may be restricted, and no prawns or shrimps are allowed.

TACKLE: A 15 foot fly rod is necessary for many Tweed beats. Floating and sinking lines should be carried, plus chest waders, wading stick and life jacket. The Ettrick and Yarrow can be fished from the bank with medium sized salmon or grilse fly rods. Tackle may be hired from the hotel.
FLIES: Waddingtons and tubes for heavy water; sizes 8 - 12 doubles or trebles at other times. Standard patterns such as Jock Scott, Garry Dog, Munro Killer, Willy Gunn, Stoats Tail, Dusty Miller, Silver Wilkinson and Ally's Shrimp.

TROUT FISHING
A wealth of quality trout fishing is available locally throughout the season (April to September). The best months are usually May, June and September, but late June, July and August can be productive months for brown trout on the rivers. Fly is the preferred method and there may be restrictions on spinning or bait fishing. Philipburn's private trout loch at Stantling Craig’s costs 10 UK Pounds per day, 25UKP weekly, 35UKP per season, and permits are also available for other lochs and moving water at Selkirk and Galasheils.

TROUT FISHING COURSES:
Philipburn holds 6-day Trout Fly-fishing Courses run by local professionals. Groups are kept small for individual attention. Private tuition can also be arranged. Courses include slide lectures, casting, knot tying, fly dressing, and river and loch fishing. Equipment can be hired.
COURSE PRICES:
from 600UKP per person for the hotel (all-inclusive with packed lunches) and 280UKP per person for self-catering lodges (hotel meals extra). Non-fishing guests are welcome, in which case reduced rates apply. Please contact the hotel for full details and course dates.
