BROWN TROUT FISHING Hilton Lodge has its own wild brown trout fishing on the estate lochs and can also provide excellent salmon fishing on nearby rivers. Loch fishing with the use of boats is free to guests. The estate's two large hill lochs (Loch Na Beinne and Loch Nan Eun) with islands and boats, produce over 500 brown trout a year, with some rods taking over 30 a day. Other smaller lochs, including the one in front of the house (see picture above), also with a boat, contain good sized trout, and there is a spate burn bordering the park. Trout fishing is also also available on the rivers Glass and Farrar, and on the nearby Tomich Lochs which are set high in the hills above Guisachan. These lochs are famous for the quality of their trout, and offer excellent fishing from early in the season. Tackle and Methods Trout fishing on the estate lochs is by fly. Wet and dry fly can be used with success, although wet is the more traditional Scottish method, utilising three flies on a cast. All the standard Highland trout patterns, in small sizes, will take fish. Evening fishing in the summer often produces good baskets. Tackle can be hired from Hilton Lodge and knowledgeable ghillies (fishing guides) are available for both trout and salmon fishing by prior arrangement. Brown Trout Season: 15 March - 6 October, excluding Sundays |
SALMON
AND SEA TROUT FISHING The estate can organise salmon and sea trout fishing on the nearby rivers Beauly, Glass and Farrar. The Beauly runs from the junction of the Rivers Farrar and Glass into the Beauly Firth just east of the town of Beauly. The two major tributaries (and the Farrar in particular) flow through spectacular Highland scenery and have runs of fish from early summer onwards. The best months for salmon fishing on the Farrar, Glass and Upper Beauly are July, August and September.
These rivers have hydro dams with fish passes in several places, and the compensation water guarantees a good flow, even in drought conditions. The hydro schemes have affected the spring salmon run but there is often a good run of grilse (small summer salmon). The Beauly has sea trout in its lower reaches from February to April. The main salmon runs begin in late summer and continue to the end of the season. Tackle and Methods The larger River Beauly requires wading in its lower reaches and a 15' or 16' salmon rod is advised. Spinning is permitted on some stretches. The fly-only Glass and Farrar can often be bank fished with smaller grilse or sea trout rods. Traditional salmon flies such as Ally's Shrimp, Stoat's Tail, Munro Killer and Willie Gunn (doubles and trebles in various sizes depending on conditions) work well. Beauly Salmon & Sea-Trout Season: 11 Feb - 15 Oct, excluding Sundays |
