The following tale was sent in by Iain Hunter Macdonald
"Well it would of been the first week in July, and I had the pleasure to be fishing the Spey this fine evening for sea trout. It must of been almost 2 in the morning and the sky was still dark with very little moonlight coming through. I had been fishing slowly down my favourite pool (Tarig on the Grantown Association water) and just as my fly began its slow turn down the pool, 'bang' I was into a fish. Sure enough it was a sea trout around the 2 pound mark. I played the fish well and had it on its side slowly coming to the bank when all of a sudden my rod was almost wrenched from my hand and my line shot straight to the other bank. But it didn't stop there, it kept on going out of the water and up the bank. You've got it, an otter had grabbed my fish before me!"

Tom Wilson has had a similar experience
"Having read Ian Hunter MacDonald's experience of having an otter pinch his sea trout when just about at the net, I too have had my unlucky days with such a creature. During a day on the Hollybush stretch of the river Doon, where good sport was being had with stock fish which had moved upriver from a lower stretch, it was my turn to have my prize catch snatched from below my nose. It would be fair to say that when the culprit grabbed the played-out trout my heart missed a beat or two and I would gladly have presented the trout to Mr Otter if he had not succeeded in parting it from the fly himself.

A few days later the same thing happened, but this time his lunge to the bank was too slow and I managed to land the fish. I reckon that due to the amount of fish in the pool, and perhaps from unsuccessful efforts, this animal felt it less tiresome for someone else to do the hard work and was lying in wait for his moment to steal. Thankfully I haven't seem him again, but I hope that if he does appear in the future he may give some warning - or one angler may die of a heart attack!"
