FISHING ON THE RIVER NORTH ESK
The North Esk rises at Loch Lee and enters the sea three miles north of Montrose on Scotland's east coast. Smaller than its more famous neighbours the Dee and the Tay, it is nevertheless a first class salmon and sea trout river, with many anglers returning year after year to fish it. The North Esk is not, strictly speaking, a spate river, and fishes well for some time after a rise in the water.

The Loups Beat on The Burn water near Edzell can be very productive, with good-sized salmon caught regularly. The beat runs through a rocky gorge and fishes particularly well earlier in the year at a height of about 6 inches above summer level. The autumn run also produces good sport. Given the nature of the water, spinning and - in certain conditions only - worming are permitted in addition to fly. Prawn and shrimp are NOT allowed. Devon minnows are effective when spinning, and tube flies also work well on this water. Spring salmon run from April to June inclusive. The Autumn run is in September and October. Sea trout fishing is best from May onwards.
