Brown Trout, Arctic Char and Salmon | Lochs and River Carron

WILD BROWN TROUT FISHING
Fishing for wild brown trout on the Estate's dozen or so hill lochs is the main attraction for anglers at Alladale. Throughout the estate there are stunning views of forest, hills, rivers and glens, and the ruggedness of the landscape is perfect for those who appreciate fishing in remote, unspoilt country.

As well as brown trout, two of the lochs hold arctic char, an ancient - and fairly rare species in Scotland. The trout themselves vary in weight and colouring from loch to loch, but all are hard-fighting and there are good-sized fish to be caught. Most of the lochs can be accessed fairly easily by foot, but a few require a longer walk. Transport to the fishing can be provided by vehicle or helicopter.

Methods: Fishing on the lochs is generally by wet-fly, using traditional Highland fly patterns, but dry fly can also be fished and a dapping rod can be wielded successfully from a boat. Boats are available on some lochs, although bank fishing is often very productive on waters of this kind.

SALMON FISHING
The River Carron, which flows into the Kyle of Sutherland near Bonar-Bridge, is one of the top salmon rivers in the north-east Highlands. The Alladale beats are in the upper reaches of the river and fish best from June to August when there is a good chance of grilse (small summer salmon of between 4 and 8lbs) or larger summer fish. Salmon fishing at this time of year does, however, depend upon rainfall to bring the fish into the system. Set amid spectacular scenery the river is very attractive to fish and varies in character from rocky pools to slower stretches.

Tackle: The Carron can be fished effectively with either a grilse or sea-trout rod, or a longer (14 or 15 foot) salmon rod. Typical salmon flies include Willie Gunn, Garry Dog, Collie Dog, Ally's Shrimp, Munro Killer and Hair Mary. Suitable tackle for both trout and salmon fishing can be hired from the Estate. Ghillies (Guides) are available by arrangement, and rod rooms, drying rooms and freezing facilities are provided at the accommodation.
